INTERREG - SHARESALMO

Progetto Interreg Italia-Svizzera – Asse II.

Sharesalmo is a cross-border project focused on three native Salmonid species, funded through the Interreg Italy-Switzerland Project - Axis II. The project is developed by a broad partnership led by the Lombardy Ticino Valley Regional Park and the Canton of Ticino. The Ticino River basin, Lake Como (Lario), and the Sesia River are home to numerous species of freshwater fish in Italy, including valuable and conservationally significant species at European level. Among these are native Salmonid species such as marble trout (trota marmorata), lake trout (trota lacustre), and Padano grayling (temolo padano). In recent decades, there has been a decline in these species, particularly those that have high environmental needs, due to various factors. This decline has had repercussions not only on ecosystems but also on environmental and economic sectors, highlighting the need for measures to be taken. Sharesalmo recognizes native salmonid species as a resource of significant ecological, cultural, socio-economic, and touristic value capable of enhancing the attractiveness and uniqueness of the territory. Through direct actions on the species, structural intervention, governance measures, tourism promotion, and raising awareness, the overarching objective of the project is to ensure the conservation and sustainable management of native Salmonid species while also mitigating the impact of invasive exotic fish species, particularly the catfish. Among the expected outcomes, the project aims to establish the first cross-border monitoring platform for trout migration at the basin scale, construct fishways (passages that enhance fish migration routes), develop transferable best management practices for similar contexts, and promote sustainable tourism and fishing. The project involves eight partners, including the Società Valsesiana Pescatori Sportivi.
